From Guéthary to Biarritz

The breath of the open sea!

The sea breeze of the Atlantic is a source of inspiration. Between typical houses and surfers eager for thrills, floats an areopagus of writers and famous figures. To be discovered during a sunny weekend.

A natural environment, accommodations to recharge your batteries, restaurants, delicacies… Culture, events, books, designers, shopping, and outdoor sports! From the lighthouse to the Basque coast, passing by the Grande Plage, the Port des Pêcheurs and the Rocher de la Vierge, tourists and especially surfers from all over the world meet here. Haven’t they found a spot where they can live out their wildest dreams? In the past, crowned heads, from Elisabeth of Austria to the Duke of Windsor, came to live in this region with a strong identity. Men of letters (Ernest Hemingway), bankers, actors (Gary Cooper), fashion designers, actresses… And even if their vacations are more discreet nowadays, they have never abandoned the Basque Coast, its beaches and its magnificent view.

Frédéric Beigbeder

Owner of a beautiful villa

The pamphleteer writer blossoms with his wife and children in Guéthary, his Southwestern refuge where balance rhymes with the art of living.

Retired from Parisian life, the ex-jet setteur is full of praise for this land swept by the ocean and the winds that nourish his daily inspiration. Frédéric Beigbeder, who is concerned about heritage and stone, has acquired a beautiful Basque-inspired villa in this village that looks like an operetta. He has been living there for the past five years. Not far from its famous neighbors, Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Guéthary is the smallest village on the coast… The magic of the place? An ideal haven for writing,” he says. And the proximity of Spain, which he particularly likes. “I love San Sebastian, a city where everything is always moving. At 56, I’ve done a lot of work. Cinema, jazz, starred gastronomy, festive quality of life… this is the city where the art of living is the highest in the world.” His favorite address? The Akelarre Hotel. “A completely crazy place! Great three-star Michelin restaurant, chef Pedro Subijana’s dishes are mind-blowingly inventive, plus suites with Atlantic Ocean views and private in-room pools.”

The man who has just released the melancholy sequel to Un roman français* is also a fan of the Hôtel du Palais in Biarritz. “I’m a palace freak! I like to be pampered, to be massaged in spas, to have whims, to call room service in the middle of the night (laughs). When I left Paris to settle in Guéthary, it was reassuring to know that there was a big hotel nearby, if I had luxury urges and the desire to wallow in sophistication and historical heritage. And, flirting on the mythical beach with the shadows of Vladimir Nabokov, Hemingway, Charlie Chaplin…”

Akelarre Hotel. The Mecanismo architectural studio managed the entire construction and furnishings, giving preference to raw materials and natural materials.
An exceptional setting! 10 minutes from the center of San Sebastian. A harmonious integration in the environment and a haven of peace in the heart of the Basque Coast.
